Example: a $450 quote with $400 in line items
Illustrative quote, not a reference price: patching is $300 fixed, backing is a $100 allowance, and the visit minimum and cleanup are included in patching. The entered subtotal is $400, including the allowance. There is a $50 difference to clarify, not an automatic extra charge.
Ask what accounts for the $50 and what happens if the backing allowance changes. Painting is excluded, while texture and tax are not stated. Matching the total later would not resolve those scope questions.
Itemized repair quote checklists for homeowners
Use the appropriate worksheet to request a written scope before choosing between bids. Enter amounts only when the contractor provides them; leave missing work unpriced.
Drywall repair estimate template
- Patching and finishing: Confirm each patch size, count, wall or ceiling, and the finish left after repair.
- Visit or minimum charge: Is the visit minimum already inside the patch price? How many visits does it cover?
- Texture matching: Name the existing texture and the area to match.
- Primer and painting: Is the finish paint-ready, patch-painted or a full wall/ceiling repaint? State the paint area.
- Removal and backing: Confirm cut-out, backing and any hidden work; do not assume it is included.
- Protection and cleanup: Confirm furniture/floor protection, dust cleanup and debris disposal.
- Tax and other charges: Confirm whether tax and any other charges are included in the stated total.
Water damage repair estimate breakdown
- Leak-source repair: Name the source repair and contractor; distinguish already completed work from the remaining quote.
- Drying and monitoring: Confirm equipment, rental days, monitoring and completion criteria; check if equipment is bundled.
- Removal and disposal: List materials and measured removal areas; confirm hauling and disposal.
- Wall rebuilding: Record wall repair dimensions, material, backing and finish separately from room floor area.
- Ceiling rebuilding: Record ceiling dimensions and access; confirm texture separately.
- Primer and painting: Name each wall or ceiling and its paint area; avoid counting patch paint plus full-surface paint.
- Insulation, trim and other work: Name each extra and its scope. Unconfirmed work stays unpriced.
- Tax and other charges: Confirm tax, permits and any separately billed charges.
Siding repair quote checklist
- Panels and installation: Name material, profile, color, operation and panel count or measured area; confirm a matching product.
- Visit or minimum charge: Confirm whether the minimum is inside the panel repair or charged separately.
- Removal and disposal: Confirm tear-off and hauling for the selected repair or replacement extent.
- Sheathing or backing: Is hidden backing confirmed, an allowance, or priced only after opening the wall?
- Weather barrier and flashing: Name the barrier and flashing work around openings and transitions.
- Trim and finish: Identify reused/replaced trim, sealing, and any painting or color matching.
- Access and equipment: Confirm stories, staging and equipment included in the written scope.
- Tax and other charges: Confirm tax, permits and cleanup against the stated quote total.
How to check a contractor quote without counting work twice
- Record the repair size, count, material and finish. Compare the same scope, not just two totals.
- Enter each separately charged fixed price or allowance once. An allowance is part of the stated budget but may change.
- For bundled work, choose “Included in another line” and name the priced package. Do not add a second price for its covered work.
- Keep excluded, already completed and unpriced work separate. Ask whether exclusions require another quote.
- Compare the subtotal with the quote’s stated total, then download the questions for your contractor.
Can this tell me whether a repair quote is fair?
It checks the amounts and scope information you enter. It does not inspect the property, identify every possible repair, rate contractors or determine a local market price. Use reviewed cost examples only where the repair scope matches.
Is an allowance the same as a fixed price?
No. Record it separately and ask what it covers, how the actual cost is established and how changes require approval. This worksheet does not invent a contingency percentage.
Can I use this for a water damage insurance claim?
You can organize contractor scope and amounts. The worksheet does not determine policy coverage, deductibles or insurer payments.
Where are my quote details saved?
Editing happens in your browser. “Save quote version” stores a worksheet in this browser; it does not sync between devices. Download a text copy for your own records. No quote amounts or notes are added to share links or analytics events.
Can I compare multiple quotes for one repair?
Name your project and save a quote version. “Add another quote for this project” keeps the planning scope and starts fresh contractor amounts and inclusions. Compare two saved versions, download the differences, or add a chosen quote as an alternative in My repair list. Add custom price lines and compare schedule, warranty and payment terms alongside amounts. Workspace JSON backups restore saved quotes, repair-list items and selected alternatives in another browser; ordinary text reviews are for reading.
What happens when a contractor revises a quote?
Open the linked quote from My repair list, edit it and save a new version. Choose “Update linked repair list items” to use that version in the list. Earlier quotes remain available, and your selected alternative stays selected. A revised calculator scope can also be attached to an existing project before entering new prices.
